What is the FERC?

Support for Family and Caregivers

When someone you care about is struggling with mental illness or substance use, it can feel overwhelming and confusing. Whether you're navigating hospitalization, the legal system, treatment options, or just trying to find help, you don't have to do it alone.

The Family Education and Resource Center (FERC) is here to support families and caregivers in Kern County.  FERC serves as a central hub for education, resources, and advocacy, connecting you with the information you need to support your loved one, and take care of yourself along the way.

What We Provide

  • Education - Clear, plain-language guidance on topics like hospitalization, legal holds, privacy rights, treatment options, and how the behavioral health system works
  • Support & Resources - Referrals, guidance, and emotional support for families and caregivers
  • Advocacy - Help understanding your role in your loved one's care, communicating with providers, and advocating for your families needs

Whether you're trying to understand a 5150 hold, help someone access services, or simply don't know where to begin, the Family Advocate can help guide you.

Family Advocacy Support

"Family" can include anyone deeply connected to the person receiving care, parents, partners, siblings, friends, or chosen family.

If you're feeling stuck, unheard, or unsure what to do next, a Family Advocate can help you understand you options, communicate with providers, and stay involved in your loved one's care.
