Note: If your loved one needs urgent medical care, they may be first be admitted to an Emergency Room for medical clearance prior to receiving psychiatric evaluation. 

After admission to a Crisis Unit: 

• Clinical staff will evaluate your loved one to determine whether inpatient treatment is necessary or can be returned safely to the community
• This decision is typically determined within 24 hours
• If further treatment is needed, they will be transferred to an Inpatient Psychiatric Facility

1. Ask About Discharge Planning
   • Find out when discharge decisions will be made, what criteria are considered, and how you can be involved in the process.
2.  Communicate with the Hospital
   • You can share helpful information, such as medications, diagnosis, relevant history, or safety concerns.

   Note: Even if staff cannot provide updates with you due to privacy laws, they can still receive information from you.

   • Understand the legal process behind 5150 holds and their extensions (such as 5250 or 5260) as well as your loved one's rights during involuntary hospitalization.
