My Loved One Has Been Arrested

Dealing with the criminal justice system in addition to the behavioral health system can be challenging. We’ve created a step-by-step guide to help families cope with navigating the criminal justice system in Kern County when a family member who experiences behavioral health challenges is arrested.

Concerned Family Members Supporting MotherStep 1: Support Your relative

  • If your relative or friend has been arrested, help the person stay calm and let them know you will help.

Step 2: Contact the Jail

  • The Lerdo Pre-Trial Facility holds incarcerated persons of high security levels. To reach them, call (661) 391-7900.
  • To stay updated on your loved one's criminal court case, use these links.
  • You may also want to visit the Kern County Sheriff's Office website for further information about the jail regarding inmate supports (money, hygiene etc.)
  • The Sheriff's Department can provide you with information about Visiting Hours

Step 3: Contact Correctional Behavioral Health (CBH)

  • Call the Correctional Behavioral Health Team at (661) 391-3191 and inform them of your loved one's presence in the jail.  Communicate that your family member has a behavioral health concern, describe the diagnosis, and share any other concerns.

IMPORTANT: If you know or suspect your relative has had recent thoughts of suicide, or suicide attempts, be sure to inform both the jail and CBH staff.

Step 4: Contact the Office of Patients' Rights/Family Advocate

The Family Advocate is available at (844) 360-8250. They are your support person to assist you in staying connected with your loved one and navigating the behavioral health system of care.

Step 5: Fill out the Family/Caregiver Information Form

Complete the Family/Caregiver Information Form and work with the Family Advocate to ensure it is given to the appropriate care teams.
