Serious Mental Illness (SMI) is a medical condition that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. It can make it hard for someone to understand reality, care for themselves, or maintain relationships. Common diagnoses include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression, but every person is unique in how they experience these conditions.
Mental illness is not caused by bad parenting, weakness, or lack of willpower. It's a brain-based disorder, and recovery is possible with the right treatment and support.
Families often feel scared, confused, or helpless. You are not alone. One of the most powerful things you can do is learn about your loved one's condition, stay involved, and get support for yourself too.
Key Things to Know:
- Serious mental illness is treatable, recovery takes time, but it is possible.
- Many people with SMI struggle to recognize they are unwell (this is called anosognosia).
- Support from family can be life-changing, even when communication is difficult.
- You can play an important role in treatment, advocacy, and stability.
